Dex is an 11-year-old who would rather enjoy regular kid stuff than get pulled into a tricky situation. But his loyalty to his friends—and his faith in Jesus—often lead him right into an adventure. When he needs direction, he prays and turns to the Bible. Dex makes mistakes and sometimes worries about being rejected. He’s learning to trust God and choose what’s right, even when he feels afraid.
Adam is a redheaded skater who knows what’s happening at school and around the neighborhood. He was adopted and hopes to learn more about his birth parents. He’s also learning to question the prejudice around him. Adam doesn’t know much about Jesus yet, but the faith he sees in Dex makes him curious. His friendship with the crew gives him room to ask questions and grow.
Jimmy is a shy fifth-grader, a computer whiz, and the crew’s gadget expert. When he has an idea, his friends listen—even if they need help translating his big words! His busy parents give him plenty of things, but he really wants their time and attention. Dex and the crew help him come out of his shell. Jimmy is learning that his worth is bigger than his gadgets or how much he knows.
Kisha is Dex’s classmate and goes to the same church. Energetic and outspoken, she’s often the first to defend a friend—and sometimes speaks before she thinks! When a situation gets scary, she can lose her nerve and pull Dex into the middle of it. Kisha loves God. As she deals with fears, doubts, and worries about her mom, she’s learning to let that faith shape the way she lives.
Also known as “The Peginator” or “Peg-A-Tron,” Peggy brings an outgoing personality to the crew. She lives with her dad, who works for Hightower Records. She admires Kisha, though their friendship can get a little bumpy. Peggy’s rebellious streak sometimes lands her in trouble. She has a prosthetic left leg and is learning to move past embarrassment, accept herself, and be the best she can be.
JD is the school bully who keeps putting Dex’s patience and courage to the test. He picks fights, tries to take lunch money, and mocks Dex’s faith. When trouble breaks out, JD is often in the middle of it.
There is more to JD than his tough attitude. Dex’s patience and courage are tested by how JD treats others. Hurting someone is never okay.
There is more to JD than his intimidating behavior. His background gives context to his actions without excusing the harm he causes.
